A 19th CENTURY BRONZE

by

ETIENNE HENRI DUMAIGE
French, 1830 - 1888

A finely cast 19th century bronze statue.

A student of Feuchère and Dumont, Dumaige exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1863 to 1886, showing busts, statues and groups. Different works by Dumaige were cast in bronze, in particular some statuettes of dancers, as well as works entitled Salome, Esmeralda and the present work, Omphale.

This work is a fine example of Dumaige’s oeuvre. The figure of Omphale, in dark brown patination, stands full length in classical robes, her right hand holding Hercules’ club, his lion skin draped over a pillar on which she leans.

In classical mythology Hercules became a slave to Omphale, a Lydian queen as a punishment for the slaying of his friend Iphitus.

Signed at base and numbered 23345.

Height: 24 inches (60 cm)

Condition: Fine original condition
