Bust in white Carrara marble with associated socle.
This is a simply outstanding example of the sculptor’s art, combining realistic portraiture with spectacular craftsmanship. Intricately carved detail is apparent everywhere, on the sitter’s bodice, hair slides, necklace and on the profusion of roses and leaves around her shoulders. All details are faithfully and painstakingly reproduced. This is a fine example of the sculpture coming from the ateliers of Florence towards the close of the 19th Century.
There is little biographical detail available about Andrei Cambi but he produced several items that are noteworthy including The Toast (1894), a marble statue (140 cm high), a Young Girl with Flowers (1893) (110 cm high) and Young Shepherdess (101.5 cm) (1889). He was probably related to Ulisse Cambi also working in Florence about whom considerably more is known.
